Dylan Thomas – Growing a Career from Placement to Progressing in Leadership

“JNP Legal supported me from my university days right through to qualification and leadership. The guidance, development of talent, and trust here make all the difference.”

Early ambitions in law

Dylan was drawn to a career in law by a desire to solve complex problems and help people navigate difficult situations. The prospect of dynamic, challenging work alongside the opportunity to make a positive impact on clients' lives made law an appealing and fulfilling path.

Dylan’s journey with JNP Legal began in 2018, when he first joined the firm for a work experience placement while studying at university. These early opportunities offered him valuable insight into daily legal practice and marked the beginning of a long-term career with the firm.

Joining JNP Legal

After graduating from the University of South Wales with First-Class Honours in LLB Law, Dylan officially joined JNP Legal as a Paralegal in 2021. He balanced this role while completing his LLM Legal Practice Course, in which he also achieved First-Class Honours. Supported and encouraged by colleagues across the firm, Dylan continued to build his foundation and commenced his Training Contract in June 2022.

Career progression and internal opportunities

Having gained significant experience and hands-on responsibility throughout his training, Dylan qualified as a Solicitor in 2024 and chose to specialise within JNP Legal’s Family Department. Demonstrating impressive professional growth, he was promoted to Associate Solicitor in 2025 and has since taken on the additional responsibility of becoming the Head of the Pontyclun office.

Throughout his career with JNP Legal, Dylan has been given opportunities to develop both professionally and personally, stepping into increasing levels of responsibility backed by the guidance and mentorship of senior colleagues. His progression from a student work placement to heading an office demonstrates JNP Legal’s commitment to investing in its people, supporting professional development and creating meaningful opportunities for career progression

Learning, development and specialism

Alongside his primary focus as a Family Law Solicitor, Dylan expanded his skills to become an accredited Police Station Representative, providing vital advice and assistance to individuals detained in custody.

Looking ahead, Dylan remains committed to building his long-term career with JNP Legal, continuing to deepen his expertise in family law while contributing to the ongoing growth and success of the firm.

Culture, flexibility and support

For Dylan, JNP Legal’s strength lies in its positive, encouraging environment, which empowers team members to grow in confidence and achieve rewarding careers. The firm actively champions continuous learning at every stage, providing the trust and room needed for individuals to take on fresh challenges and progress within the practice.

Advice for those considering a career in law

Dylan highlights his key advice for anyone looking to enter the legal profession:

  • Take every opportunity: Say yes to new experiences whenever they arise.
  • Get involved: Be proactive, show initiative, and demonstrate what you are capable of.
  • Learn from mistakes: Accept that set-backs happen; some of the most valuable lessons come from moments when things don't go exactly to plan.
  • Embrace responsibility: Don't shrink away from new challenges; step into opportunities rather than waiting until you feel 100% ready.
